The Jetty — Stylist review

The BBC’s new miniseries, The Jetty, is a surprisingly confronting show that captures the contradictions of womanhood.

When we think of the coming-of-age genre, we picture a quiet, pensive tale that centres around a teenage girl—a girl who, on the cusp of womanhood, goes through the painful yet joyful process of discovering what the world really is and how she might fit into it as she becomes a woman. We’ve had plenty such stories in recent years, including Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things and Molly Manning-Walker’s How To Have Sex. In each of these tales (and many others like them), we follow a young girl from victimhood and ignorance to (relative) emancipation and knowledge.
